Porto Ercole

Porto Ercole it is a delightful small fishing village of the Argentario penisula on the south part of Tuscany Maremma. By narrative , the first human installments to date back to the Etruscan age, from iron era to the Roman empire with the Domizi Enobarbi, a powerful banker family that chosen Porto Ercole as their holiday place and as commercial and refuges port thanks to its natural creek together with the nearby Cala Galera.

Around Porto Ercole there are many areas plenty of ancient Roman ruins, the nearby Citta di Cosa located in the hill top of Ansedonia, the Roman Villa on the Giannutri Island and the Domiziano Port.

On the early 800, when the village was under the French Carlo Magnum domination, had been donated to the Abbazia  delle Tre Fontane. Under the Pontificio Status, was used for the olive oil and Rimini grapes wine production.

Later on the Argentario became part of the Aldobraneschi and Orsini family, of Ladislao king of Naples and then around 1410 of the Republic of Siena .All the fortification in the area are date back to this period.

The worst time of Porto Ercole  was in to the Medio Evo and just on the late renaissance it raised again as an important commercial port surrounded from three Fortress, before Sienese and then Spanish fortified under the Presidi Status, becoming an important military first line used to defending against a pirates invaders leading from a famous ottoman Barbarossa.

On the 1610 Michelangelo Merisi , known as “il Caravaggio” died in Porto Ercole.

Thanks to the Dutch real family…which made Porto Ercole its Summer Holiday resort in 1960 for more than 40 years…Porto Ercole today it’s world well know place for a first class Summer Holiday.

The proximity to Rome airports Fiumicino and Grosseto, respectively just 150 and 45 km away, and the art cities like Siena and Florence easily accessible, have made over the years in Porto Ercole area find a resort known for its natural beauty and for its international ports. Walking on the boardwalk and is fascinated by the array of shops, bars and restaurants where typical and characteristic landscapes are the backdrop to its pristine sea.

In the summer Porto Ercole is the peak with its beaches and coves surrounded by lush Mediterranean vegetation, beaches lived through many activities in their waters.
